A Point of Pride:
Editorial by Stephanie Lewis,
NWACC Art Club Advisor

A small group of thoughtful people could change the world.
Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. -- Margaret Mead
Some people show up and stand on the sidelines. Some people actually get in the game. Some people need a carrot or a stick to entice or prod them into doing something. Some people do things because it's right, or it helps others, or enhances their community. Likewise, some people enroll in classes, attend them, and do homework, while others participate in their school's community, contributing to campus life. Some people look at their own lives and wonder only about what they can get out of it and those around them. Others look at their own lives and think of what they can contribute or share with others.

Over the last several months, I have had the pleasure of working with a group of intrinsically motivated, altruistic, organized, intelligent, and creative group of people to put on our fundraising concert event, Art Rocks. This was not an easy thing to get off the ground, and there were many obstacles and difficulties in our way. But, I have never been prouder of a group of people in my entire life. The breadth of skills brought to the table and the level of teamwork was astounding to observe.

The stereotype about artists is they don't work well together because their heads are in the clouds. This stereotype couldn't be any less accurate regarding this group of individuals. The individuals most closely linked with this project were Club President Sarah Carson, Vice President Mike Eckels, Public Relations Coordinator Sarah LaReau, Olga Ledyan, Alex Garcia, Kris Johnson, Malinda Moore, Mistie Allen, Oscar Felan, Jeremy O'Daniel, Debra Martens, and Alex Avitts. If I had a company, I'd want all of these people in my employment. They all have unique gifts that they willingly share, and humor when things don't go as planned. They think of how they can give or help, not what they can take or receive personal benefit from. They work well together.

During the course of this event's planning and execution, I learned some things about these individuals. Sarah Carson is a great leader and organizer. She's assertive, takes responsibility, and delegates when necessary, showing great discernment in who to delegate what job to. She put a tremendous amount of work into this project. A lot of that work went unseen, but it was appreciated tremendously. I learned that Mike Eckels is an excellent band roadie. Sarah LaReau is a great designer and promoter, but I also learned that she values altruism very highly, which is a rare quality. I learned that Olga Ledyan is an excellent wrangler of teenagers. Alex Garcia and Kris Johnson are diligent and talented event photographers. Malinda Moore works hard and only wants to know where she can be of help. Mistie Allen is an excellent emcee. Oscar Felan is a charismatic, young entrepreneur who willingly donated our raffle prize; as well as, drummed up donations during the Chalk Rocks event preceding Art Rocks. Jeremy O'Daniel and Debra Martens are a crack security team. Debra also always has a great sense of humor and a smile on her face. Alex Avitts knows how to motivate people into stepping outside their comfort zone and draw on concrete with chalk in the middle of the day. He also had some good advice about sound mixing.

If this event had been organized and executed by any other group of people, the problems we encountered would have been a discouraging factor to the work at hand. However, this group evolved from being goal-oriented to experience-oriented, and the fact that the event itself flowed so smoothly is a testament to this shift. These individuals are getting more than a college transcript out of their college experience, they are getting career experience, portfolios, and life experience. If you see any of these people in the halls at NWACC or around in the community, congratulate them on a job well-done.

After saying all of this, I want to remind everyone who is or wants to be a member of the NWACC Art Club, about something important. The seeming weakness of the fluid nature of any club or organization on the NWACC campus is also its strength. That fluidity democratizes the experience of being in the Club rather than setting up rigid hierarchies. You may be busy with your life or school work, but every talent and skill can be valuable and no contribution is too small to the life of the Club. There are many things members can do to help the Club that require little effort but have big impacts; such as, offering to put up fliers, forwarding emails about events to friends, attending and/or bringing food/drinks to events. The Club also values ideas and initiative to carry out those ideas. If you have an idea for an event or project for the Club, all we ask is that you spear-head the idea. The Club will help you carry that idea out--working as a team. I hope more people will choose to get involved in the exciting projects the Club is working on. All skills are needed and all campus members are welcome to join the NWACC Art Club --whether you are an artist or not--you only need to have an appreciation for art.

Bernie Madoff Lampooned by Sculptor

From Huffingtonpost.com:

The latest Bernie Madoff-inspired art was displayed at a Beijing art gallery on Sunday. "What You see Might Not Be Real," by Chen Wenling depicts the Ponzi schemer as a devil, horns and all. The bull, which represents Wall Street, is farting because in Chinese "放屁" (fang pi) literally means to fart, but in slang means to bluff or lie.

Why Buy a Ticket to Art Rocks?

Art Rocks Press Release

Art Rocks
is Saturday, October 3 at 7:00 PM at the Benton County Fair Grounds Arena.

Art Rocks is a benefit concert that benefits NWACC Art Club programming and the Benton County School of the Arts High School. The school's mission is to "to promote high achievement and academic success by providing a rigorous and challenging curriculum and to educate and encourage talented visual and performing artists to achieve the high artistic standards necessary to become leaders in their respective fields." From the school's website:

"The Benton County School of the Arts High School is located at 506 West Poplar near downtown Rogers, Arkansas. Our Performing Arts Center is extraordinary and is used by our theatre, choir, orchestra, and dance students. Our buildings and students are monitored by a state-of-the-art security system. Staff and students wear identification badges that give them access to buildings and classrooms. The average class size is fifteen students.
Campus staff consists of one administrator, one educational assistant/business manager, fifteen teachers, a cafeteria manager, and a building/grounds supervisor.
The BCSAHS Parent-Teacher Guild is very active in the daily life of our school. This dedicated group has helped with fund-raising, performances, teacher appreciation, school work days and have served as our ambassadors in the community."

Did you also know....

that most of the NWACC Art Club's programming is free to the public? Over the last two years, the following events were free:

  • Know the Law: Copyright/Intellectual Property Rights presentation by Tim Cornelius.
  • Chalk it Up to Art! Sidewalk Chalk Event
  • Susana Jones Artist Talk and Slideshow
  • Strangers & Not So Strange Photography Exhibit of Craig Earl Nelson's Photography with Artist Talk
  • The Face: Jesus in Art, documentary film showing
This semester, the free events include an artist talk by painter Robert Andes, a reprisal of our sidewalk chalk event and a documentary film showing of How to Draw a Bunny, a film about artist Ray Johnson. These things are free to the public but not free to the Club. By buying a ticket to Art Rocks, you help us continue our free programming and advocacy for art on NWACC's campus. In addition, you help club members with limited funds go on an annual field trip to a center of artistic production. This last spring, 10 members were able to go to Chicago for very limited cost due to our fundraising endeavors last year. I hope you will buy a ticket to Art Rocks!

Don't forget we have a great lineup of bands with something for everyone! There's a solo guitarist (Taylor Clayborne), an Indie rock band (Disasterful), a band that plays cover rock tunes from several generations (Sucker Punch Railroad), and an original rock band (The Great Scotts).

Nature's Dance & Art:
Call for Artists

Konstantin and Arena Kolotov as
Cavalier and Sugar Plum Fairy (Photo by Rick Kyle)

Link to Promotional Card

Website

From Catherine Kyle:

"We have two collaborative concerts each year where we introduce the performing art of dance (ballet and other forms) and visual art to an audience with a unifying theme. We want our patrons to experience art in a concert/gallery setting. Each concert showcases the talents of 3 or 4 up & coming choreographers (or our resident choreographers) in conjunction with 3 or 4 local artists. We select the artists based on the theme and would love to vary the medium if possible.

This theme is NATURE’S DANCE & ART. The dances are Under the Sea (choreographed by Jane Vorburger of New York), Summertime (choreographed by Michelle Brekelbaum of Fayetteville) and Midsummer Night’s Dream (choreographed by Melinda Tobian of Little Rock.) The dance space is a 50 X 50 studio turned into a “black box”. The gallery space is a 25 X 45 studio turned into a gallery with black draping on the walls. We can display on easels, from the ceiling or floor (standing), or on table top.

The committee will choose three to four artists for this concert on Friday October 2nd and Saturday October 3rd. Gallery opens at 6:30 and performance begins around 7:00 p.m. each evening. We offer a cocktail setting with beverages and finger foods. The tickets are $15 per patron with all proceeds going to Classical Ballet Academy to cover the costs of the food/beverage/decorations/advertising. (We are a non-profit organization – 501 (c3) but the ticket is not a tax deductible donation. We have received donations from patrons at the concert to support our art.) The Artist installs her work on Thursday October 1st after 5:00 p.m. and Friday day if more time is needed. Each Artist provides at least two and up to six pieces that represent the theme. A portfolio/bio showing other work is always nice too. The Artist should plan to be present for the entire event (both nights) to interact with the patrons. The Artist prices, labels and handles all negotiations for the selling of their works. If a piece sells or is commissioned through a contact from that weekend, there is a 15% commission owed to CBA. There is no other fee for the Artist. We ask the Artist to provide, if possible, a list of patrons, friends and family that would like to be added to the mail-out and email list for this event.

We offer online ticket sales but tickets are available at the door. The capacity is approximately 75 (patrons not including performers, hosts, etc.) per evening.

Our designer, Patricia Etzel, and media relations, Kyle Weaver, are responsible for the publicity and media contacts but we welcome any contact/patron information the artists may have available.

If you or any other artist is interested in this concert or the March 13/14 concert (spiritual theme), you can contact me directly at rickkyle@swbell.net so we can arrange for the committee to see some samples and the “gallery space” together."

Fallen Princesses

Full article here.

Dina Goldstein has created a provocative body of photographic work.

"The project was inspired by my observation of three-year-old girls, who were developing an interest in Disney's Fairy tales. As a new mother I have been able to get a close up look at the phenomenon of young girls fascinated with Princesses and their desire to dress up like them. The Disney versions almost always have sad beginning, with an overbearing female villain, and the end is predictably a happy one. The Prince usually saves the day and makes the victimized young beauty into a Princess."

Shepard Fairey Outwits AP

Link to article.

"This week, Fairey responded to a lawsuit filed by the AP in which the news organization claims that the artist broke copyright laws when he used its photograph of Barack Obama for his "Hope" poster.

Fairey's lawyers said in papers filed at a New York court Wednesday that the artist's use of the photograph is protected by the First Amendment as well as by fair-use laws.

But the real attention-grabber was Fairey's assertion that the AP itself violated copyright laws when it used a photo of the artist's "Hope" poster without getting permission. In other words, he's arguing that the AP can't reproduce an image by Fairey that the artist himself appropriated from the AP."

The selected book, Letters to a Young Artist, penned by Anna Deavere Smith, is a call to action to make “art that is meaningful.” After reading the book, participants will respond to the call and produce their own artist book which will be exhibited at their local Library.
