Bernie Madoff Lampooned by Sculptor

The latest Bernie Madoff-inspired art was displayed at a Beijing art gallery on Sunday. "What You see Might Not Be Real," by Chen Wenling depicts the Ponzi schemer as a devil, horns and all. The bull, which represents Wall Street, is farting because in Chinese "放屁" (fang pi) literally means to fart, but in slang means to bluff or lie.

Art Rocks is Saturday, October 3 at 7:00 PM at the Benton County Fair Grounds Arena.

Art Rocks is a benefit concert that benefits NWACC Art Club programming and the Benton County School of the Arts High School. The school's mission is to "to promote high achievement and academic success by providing a rigorous and challenging curriculum and to educate and encourage talented visual and performing artists to achieve the high artistic standards necessary to become leaders in their respective fields." From the school's website:

"The Benton County School of the Arts High School is located at 506 West Poplar near downtown Rogers, Arkansas. Our Performing Arts Center is extraordinary and is used by our theatre, choir, orchestra, and dance students. Our buildings and students are monitored by a state-of-the-art security system. Staff and students wear identification badges that give them access to buildings and classrooms. The average class size is fifteen students.

Campus staff consists of one administrator, one educational assistant/business manager, fifteen teachers, a cafeteria manager, and a building/grounds supervisor.

The BCSAHS Parent-Teacher Guild is very active in the daily life of our school. This dedicated group has helped with fund-raising, performances, teacher appreciation, school work days and have served as our ambassadors in the community."

This semester, the free events include an artist talk by painter Robert Andes, a reprisal of our sidewalk chalk event and a documentary film showing of How to Draw a Bunny, a film about artist Ray Johnson. These things are free to the public but not free to the Club. By buying a ticket to Art Rocks, you help us continue our free programming and advocacy for art on NWACC's campus. In addition, you help club members with limited funds go on an annual field trip to a center of artistic production. This last spring, 10 members were able to go to Chicago for very limited cost due to our fundraising endeavors last year. I hope you will buy a ticket to Art Rocks!

Don't forget we have a great lineup of bands with something for everyone! There's a solo guitarist (Taylor Clayborne), an Indie rock band (Disasterful), a band that plays cover rock tunes from several generations (Sucker Punch Railroad), and an original rock band (The Great Scotts).

Nature's Dance & Art: Call for Artists

"We have two collaborative concerts each year where we introduce the performing art of dance (ballet and other forms) and visual art to an audience with a unifying theme. We want our patrons to experience art in a concert/gallery setting. Each concert showcases the talents of 3 or 4 up & coming choreographers (or our resident choreographers) in conjunction with 3 or 4 local artists. We select the artists based on the theme and would love to vary the medium if possible.

This theme is NATURE’S DANCE & ART. The dances are Under the Sea (choreographed by Jane Vorburger of New York), Summertime (choreographed by Michelle Brekelbaum of Fayetteville) and Midsummer Night’s Dream (choreographed by Melinda Tobian of Little Rock.) The dance space is a 50 X 50 studio turned into a “black box”. The gallery space is a 25 X 45 studio turned into a gallery with black draping on the walls. We can display on easels, from the ceiling or floor (standing), or on table top.

The committee will choose three to four artists for this concert on Friday October 2nd and Saturday October 3rd. Gallery opens at 6:30 and performance begins around 7:00 p.m. each evening. We offer a cocktail setting with beverages and finger foods. The tickets are $15 per patron with all proceeds going to Classical Ballet Academy to cover the costs of the food/beverage/decorations/advertising. (We are a non-profit organization – 501 (c3) but the ticket is not a tax deductible donation. We have received donations from patrons at the concert to support our art.) The Artist installs her work on Thursday October 1st after 5:00 p.m. and Friday day if more time is needed. Each Artist provides at least two and up to six pieces that represent the theme. A portfolio/bio showing other work is always nice too. The Artist should plan to be present for the entire event (both nights) to interact with the patrons. The Artist prices, labels and handles all negotiations for the selling of their works. If a piece sells or is commissioned through a contact from that weekend, there is a 15% commission owed to CBA. There is no other fee for the Artist. We ask the Artist to provide, if possible, a list of patrons, friends and family that would like to be added to the mail-out and email list for this event.

We offer online ticket sales but tickets are available at the door. The capacity is approximately 75 (patrons not including performers, hosts, etc.) per evening.

Our designer, Patricia Etzel, and media relations, Kyle Weaver, are responsible for the publicity and media contacts but we welcome any contact/patron information the artists may have available.
